Hey!
Are you good? I hope so! Still painting here - I’m about halfway through the paintings I want to have in hand for the July show and I’m starting to wonder: Is this too weird?
New Paintings in here…
This series I’m working on now is a full collection of work to fit a small solo show - El Circo de Animales Extranos or The Circus of Strange Animals. The way I work, that means defining an organizing concept and creating a complete body of work in that concept. I find this way of structuring and exploring ideas is more interesting and helps me more fully explore the idea. The experience of being immersed in that world also helps me bring works to completion and make sure they all belong together.
The Weirdness Intensifies
This series has started to really come together and, as often happens with creative projects of significant size, the doubt fairy flits around for a while. For this project, it’s been in the form of wondering if these are just too weird for anyone but me.
Of course, that’s just a thought and not a fact because it’s not up to me to decide what other people like. It’s only up to me to make the things that resonate with me personally and artistically. So, I do what any working creative does: I keep making the things - I even double down on the weird!
To that end, I’ve started to write a little backstory for each character in the circus. I don’t know yet if the stories will accompany them into the world or if they’re just for me but I’ll be sharing them with you in the podcast for now.
Thanks for being here with me, I’d love to hear what you think about these paintings and any questions or thoughts for the Podcast - just click reply or drop me comment.
Joy to you!
Monette
PS Don’t forget you can hear me tell you about this, and extras too, on my informal and comfortable Podcast. Listen in and hear behind the scenes!
